The Maine Coon Union is an IDP club.

MCU was started on the basis of several breeders in three different countries who were tired of seeing that the Maine Coon cats were constantly being changed in appearance from the natural breed it actually is. MCU therefore wants to only register Maine Coon cats, and preserve the breed.

Our Federation

The aim is to be one united and strong organization where the members influence is clear, direct and equal.

The basic principle is that all members have one vote. This right to vote is exercised through membership of the MCU. All members equal influence and voting rights in the federation.

One of our goals is to start a new Maine Coon database. Today we have a world-wide database that only publishes health tests for HD & HCM through its own health program. We want to publish pedigrees and health tests from everywhere. One example is OFA or hcm-scans scans from cardiologists who are not connected to any specific health program.

If you breed with new foundation lines remember we do NOT register this cats, we only allow our breeders to use new foundation lines where tha cat is registered from ACA and all papers need to show the cats origin country is America. And all papers will be checked up with ACA before we allow this cats in MCU.

New foundation lines are important to reduce the overall inbreeding rate of the breed, based on the fact that most of today`s Maine Coons are related back to the clones. You can read more about this here.

MCU – board`s duties are laid down in MCU laws.They are also responsible for the overall strategic work and day-to-day running of the federation.

MCU is an international organization for Maine Coon cat owners. Our purpose is to safeguard the interests of the Maine Coon and theyr owners all ower the world, as well as to contribute to promoting positive activities with Maine Coon cats and the development of the breed. MCU must also work for the ethical and practical correct treatment of the Maine Coon, and for the breeding of Maine Coon to take place in the desired direction, both in terms of breed standards and the health of the breed.

MCU is a non-profit federation and was founded in Norway 2024.
